A Gift of Dignity for the Handicapped

elderly and disabled, Christian Aid Ministries

Tariq,* an elderly man in Syria, is cared for by his nephew Hakeem. “We consider my uncle Tariq a blessing . . .” Hakeem said. “The Holy Bible has taught us that . . . caring for the elderly is a duty.” But with Syria in financial straits, providing proper care for Tariq is a challenge. Unable to buy adult disposable briefs, they sometimes resorted to using bed covers as an alternative. But these caused discomfort and skin issues.

When CAM contacts delivered a month’s supply of briefs, Tariq said with relief and gratitude, “I thank you very much because these diapers have become expensive.” Hakeem added, “I hope you will not forget us and will continue to visit us . . .”

The Adult Disposable Briefs program serves as a beacon of hope in situations like Tariq’s. Briefs make life easier for caretakers and help to restore comfort and dignity to recipients.

Ongoing Demand for Adult Disposable Briefs

Adult disposable briefs are a critical need in almost every area where CAM works. They are distributed to people who care for the elderly, paralyzed, or handicapped. Adult briefs are vital in easing the burden of caretakers who have limited resources and often live without running water or indoor plumbing.

The requests CAM receives for disposable briefs far outpace the funds we receive for this need. Our budget for this program in 2023 is $600,000. So far this year we have received $40,000. Because of the sensitive nature of this item and our desire to honor the dignity of recipients, it is difficult to inform donors and raise funds.

 Why the demand?

Taking care of the disabled in homes with no indoor plumbing is difficult. Caretakers are often forced to use rags or pieces of material which are washed and reused. This is especially challenging in cold-climate countries where the items must be dried indoors during the winter. Rags and less absorbent materials can cause rashes and discomfort. Disposable briefs provide a clean and convenient solution that provides dignity to the disabled. But many recipients’ meager incomes hardly cover the costs of food, housing, or heating. The cost of disposable briefs is simply more than they can afford.

Mahala

CAM contacts recently visited Mahala,* a bedridden recipient in Syria. She explained, “When I was a little child, I suffered from a high fever, and it eventually left me unable to walk. The physicians explained that the fever had damaged my nerves, weakened my muscles, and made my body frail. The bed has since become my home. I am unable to even go to the restroom unaided. I’m unhappy because I’m still relatively young, yet I am forced to rely on diapers. When we can’t afford them, my bed becomes unclean.”

A tear trickled down Mahala’s cheek, and her mother interjected, “The cost of diapers has skyrocketed, and we can’t afford to purchase them. We’re extremely grateful for your efforts and for traveling a great distance to bring us these much-needed supplies. It will undoubtedly help us save money and provide Mahala with a hygienic and restful night’s sleep.”

Mahala says, “I have faith in God, for He is the one who comforts me, and He is the one who sent you to lift my spirits and bring me relief.”

Caring for the elderly and disabled

elderly and disabled, Christian Aid Ministries

In many countries, caretakers find it difficult to properly tend to the needs of the elderly and disabled. They are often unable to afford supplies like adult disposable briefs, special medicines, and other necessities.

Alexandra is a 30-year-old Romanian woman who suffers from lupus, an autoimmune disease that affects the joints, kidneys, and brain. She endures terrible pain at times, and is confined to a bed in a medical center. Alexandra’s family cannot handle her medical costs, and the staff members at the center are grateful for the adult disposable briefs we provide through our supporters’ generosity. The need for adult disposable briefs exists all across the world. At this point, we have a budget goal of $600,000 for We pray that this gift would bless caretakers and some of the world’s most vulnerable.

Adult Disposable Briefs

Rihana* is a Yemeni mother whose 17-year-old daughter suffers from cerebral palsy. Her husband’s chronic illness keeps him from holding a job, and Rihana finds it extremely difficult to provide the basic items her daughter needs. After receiving adult disposable briefs, she said, “I had been depriving myself and my children of food to provide briefs for my disabled daughter.” Each day brings challenges for caretakers of disabled or elderly people in many parts of the world. Their limited incomes hardly cover basic necessities like food, housing, or heating. Caring for their loved ones without running water or indoor plumbing adds to their burdens. Many caretakers simply cannot afford to provide special medicines, wheelchairs, adult briefs, or other supplies. Adult disposable briefs are a basic gift, but they do two important things. They provide dignity and comfort for the disabled or elderly and they ease the loads of caretakers. In many places where CAM works, we find a critical need for adult briefs. A staff member in Romania shared some of the difficulties elderly people faced before receiving disposable briefs. “They used rags and pieces of material in place of briefs, then those rags were washed and used again . . . The smell was unbearable, especially during the [winter] when they dried all the rags on the stove inside the living space.” This year we hope to send more than 1.5 million adult briefs to Yemen, Romania, Syria, Israel, Liberia, Nicaragua, and other countries. These will be distributed to needy families, individuals, and homes or institutions for the disabled and elderly. Workers in homes and institutions in Romania share their struggles to cover their patients’ needs. “Most of the people in our nursing home are alone and without anyone in this world,” says a staff member from one home. “They have no income, no pension or help from anywhere. . . . Adult briefs are vital to our center. In Romania they are very expensive, and it is very difficult for us to buy them.” They also tell stories of residents who suffer from mental and physical handicaps whose families refuse to accept any connection with or responsibility for them. These homes are deeply thankful for adult briefs that relieve their expenses and help them provide quality care. “When we receive the briefs donated by you, we have more encouragement to continue this work,” said a worker from a nursing home. Haneen in Syria suffers from mental handicaps that keep her from talking clearly. She lives alone since the deaths of her parents and brother. Two brothers live in a large city, but they don’t visit her village or extend help. After being left alone in extremely difficult living conditions, Haneen became depressed and overwhelmed with grief. Believers began visiting Haneen and providing food and other items for a decent life. This care has helped to restore her joy. When believers gave her the gift of adult briefs, she responded with joy and squeezed out a “thank you.” You, our supporters, are helping to restore dignity and display Jesus’ love to elderly, bedridden, and handicapped people across the world. Thank you! If you would like to help provide much-needed adult briefs for families and caretakers, your contribution will be a blessing. *Names in this mailing are changed to protect identities.

Needy Caretakers Desperate for Adult Disposable Briefs

Adult Disposable Briefs

Adult disposable briefs are critically needed almost everywhere in the world that CAM works. Each year, we could use more than 1,000,000 adult disposable briefs. The briefs are used for needy people or homes that care for the elderly, paralyzed, or handicapped. Adult briefs are vital in easing the burden of caretakers who have limited resources and often live with no running water or indoor plumbing.

More than 1,000,000 adult briefs could be used each year.

At a home for the handicapped in Liberia, more than half of its residents need adult disposable briefs. As much as possible, CAM supplies briefs for this home. But because of our limited supply, there are not nearly enough to reach around. One of the caretakers says, “We are praying for more adult briefs for the less fortunate.”

In Romania, Parasca Cascear, who lives in a village with no running water, single-handedly cares for her handicapped children. Her husband turned to alcohol and left Parasca to look out for her family alone. Working to earn some income is out of the question for this busy mother. Her special needs children and bedridden 91-year-old mother need 24-hour care. Without the adult briefs she receives from CAM, her difficult situation would be even more burdensome.
“Words cannot express what a great help this is!” says Parasca. “Only God can reward those who think of us and help us.”

“Adult briefs are a tremendous blessing . . . the care of invalid elderly folks puts much emotional and financial strain on the caretakers.”

—CAM staff member in Nicaragua

In Bethany, the Biblical hometown of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, there is a home for the handicapped that relies heavily on CAM for adult briefs. One of the patients is Suma, who smiles with gratefulness. Despite her disabilities and rejection from her family, Suma has found love and acceptance here. Just as the disabled experienced the compassion of Jesus in the days when He walked the dusty roads of Israel, so today Suma and many others around the world also experience His love because of caring supporters like you.

Although we receive a limited amount of donated adult briefs, this supply does not nearly meet the demand. To help with this desperate need, we are setting up a special fund to purchase them for the needy. If you would like to help us provide much-needed adult briefs for the families and caretakers of the elderly, bedridden, or handicapped, your contribution will be a great blessing to them.
