“I Know I’m Spiritually Lost”

Henry* was nearly in despair about his life. CAM’s billboard Losing FAITH in God? Caught his eye, and he thought, Maybe that’s what is happening to me. Calling the number, he spilled his story to the phone team member.

Henry was raised in a Christian home, but slowly wandered away from God as he faced challenges and made wrong choices. For years he has faced the results of immorality and complicated relationships. He feels like God has simply put him aside and is just silent. “I know I’m spiritually lost,” he admitted.

Our team member listened to Henry and encouraged him to focus on God. Please pray that Henry would continue to seek God and make his way back to the faith he once knew.

Rediscovered Faith

It was Sunday morning. Charles* was motoring along the busy streets of Los Angeles, California, his mind heavy and his heart burdened with guilt. The radio played a popular tune, but he hardly heard it. That’s when he saw it—a billboard with a question that seemed to speak directly to him: Losing faith in God?

Below the unnerving question was a phone number: 83-FOR-TRUTH. He grabbed his phone and dialed the tollfree number.

“Hello, this is Dale, how are you today?”

“Hi, my name’s Charles. I saw your billboard and, well, I’m struggling with my faith. I just don’t know what to do anymore. I have been addicted to drugs and immoral habits and am so lonely. I don’t trust anyone either.”

Dale listened to Charles’s story and offered him encouragement. “Why don’t you study the life of Jesus? A good place to start is in the Gospel of Matthew in the Bible.” “I do plan to go to church this morning,” Charles replied. “I thought that might help.”

“Sometimes that’s a good step back to finding your faith,” agreed Dale.

Charles drove to the church he knew of. While the service was uplifting, he still felt a void inside him, as if something were missing.

The next week, he found himself dialing the 83-FORTRUTH number once again. This time, a team member named Roger answered his call.

“I want a relationship with God again,” said Charles. “It seems as if I am on my own. I am not able to do as I think I should. I did try a church last Sunday but something didn’t seem right there. Would you have a suggestion?”

Roger gladly suggested a church he knew of in Los Angeles and prayed for Charles.

After his call with Roger, Charles found himself reflecting. It was as if a higher power had laid down signs—starting with the literal sign on the Los Angeles highway—to draw him back to God. Guided by these signs and emboldened by the support he had received, Charles felt renewed hope that he could rediscover the faith he had lost.

A Burning Question and an Open Door

Renee* wept as she poured out her troubles to our Billboard Evangelism phone team member. “I really feel lost in my life,” she cried. “I lost my daughter because of drug use, and my mom adopted her. I still feel the pain from that. At times, I am so depressed that I despair of life.”

Renee knew little about God and the Bible but was desperate for help. She asked the question that is burning in the hearts of thousands, if not millions, of Americans—“How do I go about getting my life straightened out?” This question provided an opportunity for our team member to teach Renee about repentance and obedience to Christ. She seemed eager for help as she drank in his advice.

Did Renee make the life-changing decision to follow Jesus after she got off the phone? We don’t know. But we do know that she encountered Truth and will need to decide whether to reject it and continue her journey of sorrow or embrace it and experience the peace of walking with Jesus. Pray for Renee!

Messengers of Truth on the Highway of Life

Jayden* stared at the billboard in front of him. The large bold letters, Shackled by lust? Jesus sets free,  seemed to burn their message deep into his mind. He thought about how his immoral lifestyle kept pulling him deeper into bondage. His pursuit of pleasure and self-indulgence had him shackled.

Jayden’s grandpa had been a pastor, but his family was hardly involved in church. He grew up with little knowledge of the Bible and was now living for himself.

Realizing he was at a crossroads in life, 24-year-old Jayden called the number on the billboard and was connected to a phone team member. “How do I become a better version of myself?” he asked.

“It’s not about just living better,” replied the team member. “You need the forgiveness of Jesus.”

“How do I receive forgiveness? I’ve got some things in my life I regret,” Jayden said. Gently the team member explained how Jesus paid the ransom for man’s sinfulness with His own blood sacrifice.

Jayden wants to make the right decision but says there are so many attractions out there. Maybe, he said, he should just go on indulging in his own selfish pleasures. The team member reminded him of others who went that route and lived to regret it. “I know that’s true. That’s what I’ve seen,” Jayden agreed. “The regret is greater than the pleasure.”

The team member urged Jayden to read the Scriptures. Jayden has his grandpa’s Bible and agreed to read the book of Matthew to find out who Jesus is. Many “Jaydens” live in the United States today. They have never read the Bible. Some have never heard the name of Jesus other than as a curse word and grow up being encouraged to participate in sensuality. The only truth some people might see is a Gospel billboard along the highway. These billboards are messengers of truth that beckon travelers to make a choice.

Will Jayden make the right decision? Will he choose the power of his passions or the gift of God? Maybe the next billboard will help him decide.

“My soul is saved!”

Billboard Evangelism phone number, Christian Aid Ministries

Emily* called the Billboard Evangelism phone number last summer and said she was struggling morally. To direct her to the ultimate peace she was seeking, the phone team member encouraged her to read the Gospel of Matthew. Later, Emily told the team member that she had begun reading the Scriptures but didn’t think she would ever embrace Christianity.

Recently Emily contacted the phone team member again. “I just wanted to say thank you for guiding me to the Lord,” she said. “I’ve gotten involved in a church near me and my soul is saved! Thank you very much.”

Emily is among the millions of Americans who long for peace and fulfillment but don’t know where to turn. The goal of Billboard Evangelism is to guide people in our country to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We praise God that He is using over 1,800 billboards scattered throughout the United States to help Americans ponder if they are at peace.

“God has fully accepted me!”

God has fully accepted me, Christian Aid Ministries

Tyler* grew up knowing little about God. After seeing a CAM billboard, he called with questions about God’s existence. The phone team member explained the kingdom of heaven and God’s purpose for man.

“How do I become born again?” Tyler asked. “Would I be able to surrender to Jesus now?” It was a  sacred moment to hear him pray a simple prayer of repentance and surrender to Jesus. Our phone team member sent Tyler a Bible and Gospel literature to help him in his new walk with Christ.

Later the team member contacted Tyler, asking him how he was doing. Tyler replied, “Last night I had the best sleep of my life. . . . I have so much to look forward to today. God has fully accepted me!”

“If I could have what you have, that would be nice.” Brad* shared his thoughts with a phone team member after seeing the billboard In the beginning God created. The chaos of his broken family made him long for peace that only comes from God. Brad is one of the many thousands in America who are pleading for answers

Our phone team member prayed with Brad and encouraged him to seek direction from the Bible. This young man’s plea for answers is echoed across a restless America. Let’s pray that billboard messages will continue to remind people of God and His Truth.

Searching for answers about God

Answers about God, Christian Aid Ministries

In America, people’s hearts are hardening to the truth. Multitudes of Americans rarely hear about the Gospel. Many don’t have a Bible or other Biblical literature. As a result, the people of our country are quickly drifting away from the awareness of God. In the confusion of life, millions of souls are lost and are constantly searching for truth and answers about God.

Calling out with gospel billboards

CAM has posted Gospel messages in cities and along interstates and major highways across the United States to remind people of God and His truth. Each year, tens of thousands call our toll-free number. They are searching for answers about God, the Bible, and life issues. Each call we receive is a special opportunity to witness! Callers can choose to speak to a phone team member or listen to short sermons that coincide with our billboard messages.

The average American spends fifty minutes traveling to and from work each day, affording quality time to think. Gospel messages on billboards provide opportunities to direct travelers’ thoughts to God. Please  pray that the messages on these billboards would convict seeking souls and point them toward our loving heavenly Father.

“I’ve seen the strong faith of Christians”

strong faith of Christians, Christian Aid Ministries

Marcus* was born into a family with strong views against Christianity. After seeing several Gospel billboards, he called to say he wants to follow Jesus and be a Christian.

Our team member asked, “Why do you want to become a Christian?”

Marcus responded, “Because I’ve seen the strong faith of Christians persecuted by my people in the Middle East. With that strong faith, they must have the truth!”

Our team member explained how Jesus became the Lamb of God whose sacrifice removes our sins. Marcus asked for prayer regarding what he might face in his journey to faith in Christ.

A difference for this one

A difference, Christian Aid Ministries

A young girl walked along a beach where thousands of starfish had washed up during a storm. Reaching down, she picked up a starfish and threw it back into the ocean. She did this for some time when someone approached her and said, “Little girl, why are you doing this? Look at this beach! You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference.” The girl seemed crushed and deflated.

But after a few moments she brightened and bent down, picked up another starfish, hurled it into the ocean, and replied, “Well, I made a difference for that one!”

You may remember reading about the Kenyan woman named Brianna* in a past newsletter. Brianna called three years ago in desperation. “I went online and typed in the Google search bar ‘God, I hate you,’ ” she said. “The Billboard Evangelism website popped up first. Seeing the billboard number, I dialed it.”

I answered the call. She shared her story of immigrating to the states from Kenya and finding a job. She sent some of her money back to her parents in Kenya.

In her circle of friends Brianna met an older American businessman. They became too friendly and a son, Luca, was born. The businessman never came around again and Brianna’s life began to spiral out of control. She needed to provide for her baby but lost her job, her apartment, and her car. She moved to a homeless shelter.

“Why would God allow me to go through all these hard situations?” she asked. “My faith is dead.”

“Do you believe in God?” I asked.

“I don’t know if I do or not,” Brianna sighed.

“God loves you,” I encouraged her.

“I am not sure that He does,” replied Brianna. “Why would life be so hard? Why would everything be going wrong for me?”

I explained that when we live in sin, God cannot answer our prayers or prosper us. Sometimes we reap what we sow. “Have you confessed your sin, are your sins under the blood, and are you baptized?”

Brianna affirmed that she was baptized and did go to church some. But the pastor would hardly ever ask her how she was doing. “I am so lonely,” she said. “Why, if there is a God, is He doing this to me?”

I explained further that God is not necessarily doing this to her but she was facing the result of a sinful world. I also gently encouraged her to examine her heart.

Brianna responded that she had repented and she was not living in sin as far as she knew. I offered to send her some Gospel literature and a Bible storybook for her two-year-old son. A few days later I contacted her to give her the phone number of a local Anabaptist couple. Eventually she was able to contact the Anabaptist family and spent some time with them.

We sent a prayer alert to our supporters in behalf of Brianna, then sent a praise report later since she was doing so well. She regained her faith in God and met with several women from a local church for Bible studies.

One day in 2019, Brianna called. I hadn’t heard from her for about two months.

I could hear her crying. She wasn’t talking. “Brianna, are you okay?” I asked. No response.

I waited as she tried to get her breath. And then I heard her say, “I am just so tired. I am so-o-o-o tired. I am tired of living.”

“Can you tell me what happened?” I asked. All I could hear was her quiet crying.

Then I heard her say again, “I am so tired. If I had a gun I would end my life now.”

I encouraged her to not give up. “You don’t want to harm yourself,” I told her. “We love you and God loves you.”

“But I can’t go on any more.” By now her crying had lessened and she could talk. “If I knew that my son will be okay, I would end it all. I’m so tired of existing. I’m tired.”
I prayed for her again and promised to help in whatever way I could from a distance.

After the call, my wife Larissa and I prayed and cried together, committing Brianna and her struggles to the Lord.

As of this year, Brianna has been doing much better. She dreams of starting a business or helping in some enterprise. Her vision is to help rejected and underprivileged children of our nation. She now works part-time with a non-profit organization that connects people who have the means and heart to help, with orphans coming out of orphanages or foster homes. Brianna said she has been helping a teenaged boy, Joe.

“I told Joe how you [Harold] helped me, and told him that now I am going to help him,” she said. “I want to also show a helping hand to someone in need.”

On a recent trip, our family took time to visit Brianna and her son. Brianna is renting a room from a widow in her church. We spent about five hours with her, eating and fellowshipping.

Brianna deeply appreciated our time together. “Thank you so much for deciding to pass by,” she said. “I remember how our paths crossed three years ago and how it resulted in finally meeting in person. Only God’s divine orchestration made it possible. I was a bit nervous about how it would all go. It’s one thing meeting in person compared to talking on the phone but it felt like meeting old friends. Luca had such a wonderful time playing with your children. He is still talking about them. We immensely appreciate your thinking about us. Thank you for making the last day of 2021 special for us. We definitely will make plans to visit you in Pennsylvania in the summer. Your children were so welcoming to Luca, and you wouldn’t even know he just met them. I hope that their friendship, like ours, will continue. We are just so thankful for you and your family’s friendship and generosity. You have all been such a blessing to us and I pray that God will bless, provide for, guide, and protect you all as you enter 2022. Thank you so much again.”

This is just one of many stories. Brianna has grown spiritually and is enjoying life and her walk with God. However, many more see our billboards and need help. Pray for our team as we daily interact with many people with a story and a need. Many more callers need us to simply make a difference for this one.
